Quick Start

Install Pianove and play your first lesson in under five minutes.

Python 3.10 +pygameMIDI optional

Prerequisites

Pianove requires Python 3.10 or later and the pygame library. A MIDI keyboard is optional — you can use Pianove with your computer keyboard for testing, but a MIDI keyboard is required to follow along with lessons in real time.

python --version # must be 3.10 or later
pip install pygame

1. Clone the repository

git clone https://github.com/MariusAngermann08/Pianove.git
cd Pianove

2. Launch Pianove

python main.py

The application window opens. If a MIDI keyboard is connected, it will be detected automatically.

3. Start your first lesson

  1. Click Lessons in the left sidebar.
  2. Select Lesson 1 — Single Notes.
  3. The sheet music appears at the top. The first note to play is highlighted on the keyboard display.
  4. Play the highlighted key on your MIDI keyboard (or press the corresponding key on your computer keyboard in test mode).
  5. Pianove advances to the next note when the correct key is detected.

4. Import a MusicXML file

To practice any piece you find online:

  1. Click Library in the left sidebar.
  2. Click Import MusicXML.
  3. Select a .xml, .musicxml, or .mxl file from your computer.
  4. The piece is loaded and displayed as sheet music. Press Practice to start.

MusicXML files are available from MuseScore.com and IMSLP.org.
